Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary
Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, is located in the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, covering an area of about 4,954 square kilometers. It is the largest wildlife sanctuary in India and was established in 1972 to protect the endangered Indian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus khur), which is the last remaining population of this Asiatic wild ass subspecies.
The sanctuary is characterized by a unique saline desert landscape with about 74 elevated plateaus called ‘bets’ covered with grass that provide grazing grounds during monsoon when the area floods. Besides wild asses, the sanctuary supports a diverse array of wildlife including many bird species like greater flamingos, sarus cranes, and migratory birds.
The sanctuary's ecosystem is a blend of desert and wetland, attracting wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers especially during the winter months.
