Yavateshwar Temple
The Yavateshwar Temple is a sacred place dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the village of Yavateshwar in Satara district, Maharashtra. The temple stands proudly amidst the Western Ghats at an altitude of approximately 2500 feet. It is recognized as one of the state-protected monuments in Maharashtra and has been declared as such by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The temple was constructed in the Hemadpanti style during the 13th century CE by the Yadav Dynasty of Devagiri. It features several architectural elements, including the sanctum, antrala (vestibule), sabha mandapa (assembly hall), and mukha mandapa (front hall). The presiding deity, Lord Yavateshwar, is represented in the form of a Shiva Linga, which is a Swayambhu Moorthy, meaning it is self-manifested.
The temple also has two idols of Nandi in the Nandi mandapa, both facing the sanctum, and shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Kala Bhairavnath. Behind the temple, there is a kund (water tank) accessible via a set of steps, used for ritualistic cleansing and ceremonies.
The temple is especially popular during Mondays of Shravan and Mahashivaratri, when devotees from all over the country come to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
