Ambenali hills

Ambenali Hills, located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, are part of the majestic Western Ghats and are traversed by the dramatic Ambenali Ghat. This mountain pass connects the coastal Konkan region with the Deccan plateau, linking Poladpur in Raigad to Mahabaleshwar in Satara.

The ghat road stretches for about 40 kilometers and is known for its serpentine curves, steep descents, and breathtaking views. It winds through the dense Javali forest, a habitat for wildlife including leopards, and offers a lush, green escape especially during the monsoon season when the landscape transforms into a misty, rain-soaked paradise. Historically, the region holds significance due to its proximity to Pratapgad Fort, where the legendary encounter between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan took place.

The ghat was once guarded by forts like Pratapgad and Kamalgad, adding a layer of historical intrigue to its natural beauty. However, the road is also notorious for its treacherous conditions, especially during heavy rains when landslides are common. As of July 2025, the route has been temporarily closed to heavy vehicles due to safety concerns following multiple landslides.
