Anjanvel Fort
Anjanvel Fort, also known as Gopalgad Fort, is a historic hill fort located near the village of Anjanvel in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, about 51 km from Chiplun. It was strategically built on a hill near the coast to guard the trade route along the Vashishti River and protect the ancient port city of Dabhol.
The fort covers around 7 acres and is divided into two main sections called Padkot and Balekot, with strong fort walls and multiple bastions that were used for defense. Though the exact builders of the fort are unknown, it is believed to have been constructed during the 16th century under the Bijapur Sultanate, later captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1660, and then controlled by various rulers including the Siddis, Marathas, and the British.
The fort features remnants of its military architecture such as ramparts, a moat, and cannon bases. Presently, it is in partial ruins but remains an important historical site offering commanding views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding landscapes.
