Arnala fort
Arnala Fort, also known as Jaldurg or Janjire Arnala, is a coastal fort built on Arnala Island near Palghar in Maharashtra. It was originally constructed in 1516 by Sultan Mahmud Begda of Gujarat, strategically located at the mouth of the Vaitarna River.
The Portuguese captured the fort in the 1530s, extensively renovating it and using it to control maritime trade and navigation along the northern Konkan coast. In 1737, the Maratha Empire, led by Chimaji Appa, captured Arnala Fort from the Portuguese after two assaults, recognizing its strategic naval importance. The Marathas rebuilt and strengthened the fort with three bastions—Bahirav, Bhavani, and Bava—and used it as a naval base.
The British seized the fort during the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1817 and controlled it thereafter. Today, Arnala Fort remains in a state of disrepair but stands as a symbol of the region’s rich maritime history and the succession of powers—the Gujarat Sultanate, Portuguese, Marathas, and British—that shaped its legacy.
