Asheri Fort
Asheri Fort, also known as Asherigad, is a historic hill fort located in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, about 102 km from Mumbai. It is believed to have been built around 800 years ago by Bhojraja of the Shilahara dynasty.
The fort changed hands multiple times over centuries, being captured by Bimb Raja of Mahim in the early 14th century and later ruled by the Gujarat Sultanate. In 1556, the Portuguese annexed Asheri Fort, making it the northern boundary of their territory and the capital of 38 villages and 6 parishes.
The fort was strategically important for controlling trade routes and had extensive water cisterns to sustain its occupants. In the 18th century, the Marathas under Chimaji Appa captured the fort, but Portuguese forces briefly regained it before it finally came under Maratha control in 1739. The British East India Company took over the fort in 1818.
Today, the fort stands in ruins but offers panoramic views and a glimpse into its rich past, surrounded by lush greenery and featuring remains of water reservoirs, temples, and old settlement structures. It is a popular trekking destination and a significant historical landmark in the region. The local villagers have contributed to its restoration, and it remains accessible for visitors interested in exploring Maharashtra’s heritage.
