Avchitgad
Fort
Avchitgad
Avchitgad Fort is situated near Roha in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, located in the Sahyadri mountain range at about 1,000 feet elevation. It is believed to have been originally built by the Shilahara dynasty and later controlled by the Nizam of Ahmednagar.
The fort was reconstructed hurriedly by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which is reflected in its name 'Avchit' meaning 'hurry' in Marathi. Its strategic location allowed it to oversee important trade routes, and it features four entrance gates, two main bastions, a Shiv temple with statues of deities, and several rock-cut water tanks. During the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818, the fort was captured by the British.
Surrounded by dense forest, the trek to the fort offers scenic views of nearby forts and valleys, making Avchitgad a popular destination for history enthusiasts and trekkers alike.
