The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for its intricately carved soapstone pillars, decorative ceilings, and relief sculptures of Hindu gods. Bankapura Fort has witnessed rule by several dynasties including the Kadambas, Gangas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire, Bijapur Sultanate, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and later the British. The temple and fort suffered damage during invasions, particularly by Bahamani and Adil Shah forces, but the majestic mandapa and carvings remain largely intact.
The fort also contains a mosque within its premises and is significant for Jain heritage, with inscriptions related to Jain temples discovered in the area.
