Belgaum Fort, also known as Belagavi Fort, is a historic fort located in the city of Belagavi (formerly Belgaum) in Karnataka. The fort was originally built in 1204 by Jaya Raya, also known as Bichi Raja, an ally of the Ratta Dynasty.
Over the centuries, the fort has undergone several renovations and modifications under various dynastic rulers, including the Yadavas, the Khaljis of Delhi, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Bahmani Sultanate, the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur, the Marathas, and finally the British.
The fort is known for its robust fortifications, featuring fine ramparts, a large moat, and an oval shape surrounded by a deep moat carved from soft red stone. Inside the fort, there are temples, mosques, and other structures that reflect a blend of Hindu, Jain, and Muslim architectural influences.
The fort also has historical significance as it was the site where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned by the British during India's freedom struggle.
