Bhagwantgad
Bhagwantgad is a historic hill fort located about 18 kilometers from Malvan in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Positioned on the northern bank of the Gad river or Kalaval creek, the fort spans approximately 1.5 acres and is surrounded by dense vegetation.
It was originally built by Pant Pratinidhi to monitor and counter the activities of the Sawants of Sawantwadi, and later came under their control. In 1748, Tulaji Angre unsuccessfully tried to capture the fort after an 18-month resistance from its commandant.
The fort was eventually captured by the British East India Company in 1818. Situated in the coastal Konkan region, Sindhudurg district features a tropical climate with lush greenery, a rugged coastline, and rich cultural heritage. The area is known for its natural beauty, historic forts, and agricultural produce including Alphonso mangoes and cashews, with the fort adding to the region’s strategic and cultural importance.
