Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary
Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over 131 square kilometers in Pune district, Maharashtra, is part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. Established in 1984, it was primarily created to protect the habitat of the Indian Giant Squirrel, which is the state animal of Maharashtra.
The sanctuary includes nine tribal villages and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, wild boar, langurs, and the Indian pangolin. It also harbors many bird species like the greater spotted eagle and Malabar parakeet. The sanctuary is known for its lush forests, waterfalls, and water bodies, and its cultural significance is enhanced by the Bhimashankar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, making it a pilgrimage as well as a nature destination.
The best time to visit is from October to March, offering opportunities for trekking, wildlife spotting, and spiritual visits.
