Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Khanapur taluk of Belagavi district, Karnataka near the Goa border, covers around 190 square kilometers and is part of the Western Ghats. It was declared a sanctuary in December 2011 and is renowned for the Barapede caves, the only known breeding site of the endangered Wroughton's free-tailed bat.
The sanctuary includes tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests and is home to diverse wildlife such as tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, sambar deer, and many bird species like the Malabar grey hornbill and Malabar trogon. Bhimgad Fort, built by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, is located within the sanctuary and was historically significant for defending against Portuguese forces.
The sanctuary also forms the headwaters of important rivers like the Mhadei and offers scenic features like the Vajrapoha Waterfalls. It is an important region for biodiversity conservation and a natural habitat for several rare and threatened species. The best time to visit is from November to February.
