Bukkapatna Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary
Bukkapatna Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2019, is located in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka, covering an area of about 148 square kilometers. It is dedicated to the protection and conservation of the Indian gazelle, also known as the chinkara, and represents the southernmost point of their distribution in India.
The sanctuary’s habitat consists of wooded savannahs with grasslands interspersed among native trees like Hardwickia binata, Amla, Shallaki, and Tamarind. Besides chinkaras, it supports other wildlife such as four-horned antelope, blackbucks, sloth bears, leopards, and a variety of reptiles and birds.
Efforts to restore the sanctuary include clearing encroached forest land to maintain the ecological balance and protect the diverse species from poaching and habitat loss, making it a critical area for Karnataka’s dryland biodiversity conservation.
