Bunning Wildlife Sanctuary

Bunning Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Tamenglong district of Manipur, within the Barail Range, covering an area of about 115.8 square kilometers. The sanctuary is characterized by tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, along with alpine grasslands and wet hill forests. It features many streams and lakes that feed the Barak River, supporting a rich and diverse ecosystem.

The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife including tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, Asian elephants, gaur, Asiatic black bears, dhole, barking deer, sambar, pangolins, and several primates like hoolock gibbons and capped langurs. Bird species such as the rufous-bellied niltava, brown hornbill, and golden-throated barbet also inhabit the area. The landscape includes undulating mounds with flowering herbs, shrubs, orchids, and bamboo orchids, complemented by waterfalls reaching up to 60 meters.

The sanctuary is important for biodiversity conservation within the Indo-Burma hotspot and offers a tranquil natural environment ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The best approach to the sanctuary is via Imphal or Jiribam, with road connections providing access. Its remote hilly terrain and rich natural resources make Bunning a significant protected area in Manipur.
