Crawford market
Crawford Market, officially known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, is one of the most famous markets in South Mumbai. Established in 1869, the market was originally named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, but was later renamed to honor the Indian social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. Located near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and opposite the Mumbai Police headquarters, it has been a bustling hub for trade and commerce for over a century.
The market was the main wholesale center for fruits in Mumbai until 1996, when wholesale traders were relocated to Navi Mumbai. Designed by British architect William Emerson, Crawford Market blends Victorian Gothic architecture with indigenous elements. The structure was built using buff-colored Kurla stone and redstone from Bassein, featuring a 15-meter-high skylight awning that allows natural light to brighten the marketplace.
