The fort is believed to have been built by the Portuguese and later came under Maratha control during Chimaji Appa’s campaign in 1739. It served as a strategic coastal bastion, possibly used to intercept ships with long-range artillery.
The fort's remains include a semicircular wall and bastion, constructed with stone, clay, lime, conch shell, and rice husk.
