Dihing Patkai National Park
Dihing Patkai National Park, located in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam, is known as the largest stretch of lowland tropical rainforest in India, covering about 231.65 square kilometers. It lies at the foothills of the Patkai mountain range alongside the Dehing River and is often called the "Amazon of the East" due to its dense, rich rainforests.
The park was initially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2004 and was upgraded to national park status in 2020. It features a dipterocarp-dominated rainforest that supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare species such as the slow loris, pig-tailed macaque, capped langur, clouded leopard, Asian elephant, royal Bengal tiger, and various other mammals, birds, and reptiles.
The climate is tropical with heavy rainfall, fostering lush vegetation like hollong, nahor, orchids, ferns, cane, and bamboo. The area is also home to several indigenous ethnic communities such as Tai Phake, Khamyang, Singpho, and others, who coexist alongside the diverse wildlife. The park provides significant ecological value, serving as a crucial habitat for many endangered species and contributing to wildlife conservation efforts in the region.
