Garh Doul
Garh Doul in Sonitpur, Assam, is an important archaeological and state-protected monument located at Tarajan Kumargaon, about 7 kilometers from Tezpur.
The site features fortified ramparts forming a square covering 250 by 250 meters, with two brick mounds containing the foundations of brick temple plinths. These ruins are dated to the 7th and 8th centuries CE. According to Hindu mythology and local traditions, the fortress was built by the mythical king Banasura to imprison his daughter Usha. Archaeological excavations have revealed remnants of a larger ancient city around this site.
The Archaeological Survey of India continues work here, and a park has been constructed to promote tourism. The ruins, largely unexplored, reflect the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage tied to the legends of Banasura, Usha, and the epic tales involving Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva.
