Gorakhgad Fort, located about 24 km from Murbad in Thane district, Maharashtra, is an ancient hill fort named after Saint Gorakhnath, who is believed to have meditated in its caves. The fort served as a meditation retreat for sadhus and hermits and was also strategically used to guard the ancient trade route passing through Naneghat, linking the Konkan coast with the Deccan plateau.
Though not a large military camp, it played a key role during the reign of Shahaji Raje and Chatrapati Shivaji as a surveillance point and stopover on journeys between Junnar and Naneghat. The fort features rock-cut water cisterns, a small Mahadev temple, spacious caves with square pillars, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Sahyadri hills including Ahupe Ghat and Siddhagad.
Today, it is a popular trekking destination known for its challenging inclines and rock climbing, attracting history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.
