INS Khukri Memorial
The INS Khukri Memorial in Diu, Daman and Diu, is a poignant tribute to the Indian Naval Ship Khukri, which was tragically sunk by a Pakistan submarine during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The ship went down on December 9, 1971, taking with it 18 officers and 176 sailors. The then Commanding Officer, Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, chose to go down with the ship and was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra for his bravery.
The memorial, inaugurated on December 15, 1999, is located on a hillock at Chakratirth Beach and is a replica of the INS Khukri Naval Ship. It features a 15-meter mast displaying a military flag and an honorific plaque listing the names of the fallen sailors. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of their courage and sacrifice.
