Jamgaon Fort, located in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra, was gifted as a jagir to the great administrator and army chief Mahadji Shinde of the Peshwa by virtue of his bravery.
Mahadji Shinde was a prominent Maratha warrior who played a key role in establishing Maratha rule in northern India, including Delhi. The fort spans about 83 acres and has 20 bastions, with fortified walls forming a defensive structure around a hill. Key features inside the fort include the residences and mansions of Mahadji Shinde, temples such as those dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Ram, and Vitthal Rakhumai, as well as a mosque.
The village around the fort was once nested inside the fort premises but expanded beyond its walls as the population grew. Today, the fort remains a testament to Maratha military architecture and heritage, with many sections still standing, including gates, bastions, and remnants of old structures.
