Jijamata Udyaan, Mumbai
Jijamata Udyaan, also known as Victoria Gardens or Byculla Zoo, is Mumbai's oldest public garden, established in 1861 and formally opened in 1862. Originally named after Queen Victoria, it was renamed post-independence in honor of Jijabai Bhonsle, the mother of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The garden spans over 60 acres in Byculla and features botanical gardens, a zoo, and the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum housed in a beautiful Greco-Roman style building. The entrance sports a distinctive triple-arched gateway in Neo-Palladian style, and the park includes landmarks like the David Sassoon clock tower and an equestrian statue of King Edward VII.
The garden is rich in diverse flora and fauna, with more than 800 species of plants and numerous trees, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and families. The zoo is also a center for wildlife conservation and public education, representing an important part of Mumbai's colonial heritage and ongoing cultural significance.
