Jiri-Makru Wildlife Sanctuary, located partly in Tamenglong district and partly in Imphal East (Jiribam subdivision) of Manipur, spans around 198 square kilometers in the hilly terrain of the West Manipur Hills near the Assam-Manipur border.
The sanctuary is situated between the Jiri and Makru rivers, tributaries of the Barak River, and is characterized by tropical wet evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. It is known for its rich biodiversity, including important mammals such as tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, elephants, Asiatic black bears, hoolock gibbons, and various species of deer, pangolins, wild boars, and small carnivores.
The area is also notable for diverse birdlife including hornbills and the white-winged duck.
