Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary

Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary in Karauli, Rajasthan, spans about 674 square kilometers and was established in 1983. It is geographically characterized by rugged hills, deep gorges, and dry deciduous forests, with the Banas River on its western edge and the Chambal River to the southeast.

The sanctuary serves as a northern extension and buffer zone of the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, acting as a wildlife corridor connecting Ranthambore to the Chambal region. Its rich wildlife includes Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian grey wolves, striped hyenas, jackals, nilgai, chinkara, sambar, chital, and over 200 species of birds such as kingfishers and peafowl.

The forest vegetation mainly comprises species like dhok, khair, and tendu trees. The sanctuary is also culturally significant due to the Kaila Devi Temple within its boundary, attracting many pilgrims. Several local villages coexist in the sanctuary area, and community-led forest protection efforts have helped conserve the forests by restricting tree-felling. Its natural beauty features seasonal changes with dense green foliage during monsoons and a more arid landscape in summers, with opportunities for wildlife safaris, bird watching, trekking, and cultural experiences, making it an important ecological and tourist destination in Rajasthan.
