The Kanheri Caves are a group of rock-cut monuments located within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park on the island of Salsette in the western outskirts of Mumbai, Maharashtra. These caves date back to the 1st century CE and were used as Buddhist viharas, or monasteries, for living, studying, and meditating.
The cave complex comprises 109 caves, with the oldest ones being relatively plain and unadorned, while the later caves are highly embellished with intricate carvings and sculptures of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas.
The Kanheri Caves are made of basalt rock and feature a variety of architectural styles. Some of the notable caves include Cave 1, an unfinished chaitya-griha with two storeys; Cave 2, a large assembly hall with three stupas; and Cave 3, the largest and most remarkable cave with tall pillars, a stupa, and a large Buddha statue at the entrance.
The caves also have stone plinths that functioned as beds and rock-cut channels to trap and store rainwater.
