Kappatagudda Wildlife Sanctuary

Kappatagudda Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2019, is located in the Gadag district of Karnataka and covers an area of about 244 square kilometers. The sanctuary is known for its dry deciduous forests, grasslands, scrublands, and riverine ecosystems, often described as the "Western Ghats of North Karnataka" due to its rich biodiversity. It hosts diverse flora including teak, Butea monosperma, acacia scrub, and native grasses, along with around 400 medicinal plant species.

The sanctuary is home to various mammals such as gray wolves, striped hyenas, leopards, jungle cats, and several antelope species including blackbuck and four-horned antelope. Over 180 bird species have been recorded, with some rare sightings like the White-naped Tit.

The area also holds historical and cultural significance, featuring ancient temples and ruins from the Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties, highlighting the region's rich heritage alongside its natural importance. The sanctuary plays a vital role in conserving wildlife and maintaining ecological balance in the arid zones of North Karnataka.
