Karla Buddha Caves

The Karla Buddha Caves, also known as the Karli Caves or Karle Caves, are a complex of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves located near Lonavala, Maharashtra. These caves date back to the 2nd century BCE and were developed over several centuries, with the oldest shrine believed to have been built around 160 BCE.

The caves are situated on Ekvira Devi Road in Karla and are a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

One of the most remarkable features of the Karla Caves is the Great Chaitya, or Cave No. 8, which is the largest and best-preserved chaitya hall from that period. This hall measures 45 meters long and up to 14 meters high, and it features intricate carvings and sculptures, including depictions of both humans and animals.

The chaitya hall also houses a monolithic stupa dating back to the 1st century CE.

The Karla Caves are known for their historical significance and exquisite Buddhist sculptures, which have earned them a reputation among tourists and history enthusiasts. The caves also provide a glimpse into the economic activities of ancient society, with various inscriptions detailing donations made by monks, traders, and villagers.
