Karnala Bird Sanctuary
The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located in Panvel Taluka of Raigad District, Maharashtra, near Matheran and Karjat. It is the first bird sanctuary in Maharashtra and covers an area of 12.11 square kilometers. The sanctuary is home to over 222 species of birds, including 161 resident species, 46 winter migrant species, and several rare and endemic species.
It is also an Important Bird Area (IBA) satisfying criteria for globally threatened and restricted-range species.
The sanctuary is centered around the historic Karnala Fort, which sits atop a hill and offers a medium-hard trek for visitors. The sanctuary is accessible by road, with regular buses available from Panvel Bus Stand. It is open to visitors from 7 AM to 3 PM daily.
The sanctuary also features a bird-viewing tower, small cages for wounded birds, and a variety of amenities for visitors, including hotels and resorts nearby.
