Karnala Fort, also known as Funnel Hill, is a historic hill fort located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, about 10 kilometers from Panvel city. The fort is situated within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, making it a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
It was a place of strategic importance due to its location overlooking the Bor pass, which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra on the main trade route between these areas.
The fort has a rich history, having been constructed before 1400 under the Devagiri Yadavs and the Tughlaq rulers. Over the centuries, it came under the control of various rulers, including the Gujarat Sultanate, the Portuguese, the Marathas, and the British East India Company.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered the fort from the Mughals in 1670, and it remained under Maratha control until the British took over in 1818.
Today, the ruins of Karnala Fort are a popular destination for hiking and tourism. There are two trails leading to the fort: the Karnala Fort Trail and the Nature Trail. The trek to the fort is relatively easy and takes about an hour to complete, with resting places provided along the way. The final climbing steps near the entrance of the fort are made safe by iron railings.
The fort offers stunning views of the surrounding area and is a great spot for a day trip from Mumbai or Pune.
