Khandheri Island
Khandheri Island, also known as Kanhoji Angre Island, is an intriguing destination located about 5 km off the coast of Maharashtra, near the village of Thal and approximately 20 km south of Mumbai. This island is historically significant, featuring Khandheri Fort, which was built in 1679 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a strategic point to monitor the movements of enemy forces and protect the Maratha empire.
Khandheri Island, and its sister fort Underi (Jaidurg), formed a crucial defense mechanism along the Maharashtra coast. The island features a two-story lighthouse erected by the British in 1867, standing about 22 feet high. This lighthouse can be seen from 13 km away.
Besides the fortifications, visitors can find the temple of Sri Betal and two freshwater wells. The fort is currently under the jurisdiction of the Indian Navy and contains old cannons and the tomb of Daud Pir, a local saint.
Although a restricted area due to naval operations, recent plans by the Indian Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Shipping propose developing Khandheri Island as a tourist destination.
