Kohoj Fort
Kohoj Fort is an approximately 800-year-old medieval military fort located near Palghar in Maharashtra, about 104 kilometers from Mumbai. It has historical significance as one of the forts mentioned in the Purandar Treaty of 1665, when it was surrendered by Shivaji Maharaj to the Mughals.
The fort was originally built by the King of Gujarat and later captured by the Portuguese in the 16th century, who added fortifications and bastions. In the 18th century, it came under the control of the Peshwas before eventually falling under British rule. The fort stands at around 3,200 feet and offers scenic views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and the Arabian Sea.
Though now in a dilapidated state, it features remnants such as rock-cut cisterns, forts walls, and temples including those of Lord Shankar, Krishna, and Hanuman. The trek to Kohoj Fort starts from the nearby village of Vaghote and takes about two to three hours, passing through forested areas and natural rock formations, including a famous man-shaped pinnacle formed by wind erosion.
The fort is a popular destination for history enthusiasts, trekkers, and nature lovers looking to explore its rich heritage and natural beauty. There is no accommodation on the fort, and visitors are encouraged to be cautious while trekking.
