Kothaligad, also known as Peth Fort, is a small hill fort situated to the east of Karjat in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The fort stands at an elevation of approximately 3100 feet and is a popular trekking destination due to its relatively easy climb and the beautiful views it offers. The fort is also known for its historical significance and the remnants of its past.
The trek to Kothaligad begins at the base village of Peth or Ambivali, and the route involves a climb through dense forest and steep steps carved into the rock. The fort features caves, water tanks, and cannons, with the most notable being the Bhairoba Cave, which has well-sculpted pillars and a flat floor. The fort also has a small temple and a chimney-like tunnel leading to the top.
Kothaligad has a rich history, having been controlled by various rulers including the Ahmadnagar Sultanate, the Portuguese, the Marathas, and the British East India Company. The fort was captured and recaptured multiple times during different historical periods.
