Kulaba Fort
Kolaba Fort, also known as Kulaba Fort, is an impressive coastal fortification located in Alibag, Raigad district, Maharashtra. Situated approximately 1-2 kilometers from the Alibag shore, the fort is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and is accessible both on foot during low tide, and by boat during high tide.
Originally built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, the fort served as a key naval station for launching attacks against the British and the Portuguese Navies. The architecture of Kolaba Fort is notable for its robust stone walls, towering about 25 feet high. One of the most intriguing features of the fort is the presence of freshwater wells within its premises, which is rare for a seaside fort.
The fort houses temples devoted to Hindu gods, including a temple of Lord Ganesha, built in 1759 by Raghoji Angre. The fort is also famous for remnants such as cannons, fort walls adorned with carvings of animals and birds, and two entrances. One entrance faces the sea, and the other faces Alibag.
Kolaba Fort is a popular tourist destination and a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
