Machnur Fort is located near the village of Machnur in Solapur district, Maharashtra, on the banks of the Bhima River. Built around 1615 by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb as a strategic military base, the fort housed a large Mughal army battalion and served as a defensive stronghold against Maratha attacks. Despite the fort's robust construction with stone walls fortified on three sides, the side facing the river remained open.
The fort includes entrances with guard porches, a mosque, carved water tanks, and several bastions along the ramparts. The nearby Siddheshwar Temple within Machnur village complex is notable for its intricate black stone carvings and a large Nandi statue. The fort witnessed several historical battles between the Mughals and Marathas, including surprise night attacks by the latter.
Today, Machnur Fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Department, with significant portions of the walls, bastions, and water systems still intact, offering insights into the region's rich history.
