Madikeri

Madikeri, also known as Mercara, is the scenic hill station and administrative headquarters of Kodagu district in Karnataka, located in the Western Ghats at about 1,160 meters (3,800 feet) above sea level. It is famously called the "Scotland of India" or the "Kashmir of South" due to its lush greenery, misty mountains, coffee and spice plantations, and cool climate.

The town has a rich history, named originally as Muddurajakeri after the Haleri king Mudduraja who built a fort there in 1681; the fort was later rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan. Madikeri is known for its peaceful environment, panoramic views such as from Raja’s Seat garden, historic sites including the Madikeri Fort and Omkeshwara Temple, and cultural festivities like the Dasara festival celebrated with colorful processions.

As a biodiversity hotspot and UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts a clean and fresh environment, thriving plantations, and a blend of cultural and natural attractions that draw tourists seeking nature, heritage, and tranquility in southern India. The local Kodava language and culture add to the distinctive character of the region.
