Male Mahadeshwara Hills, located in the Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka, is a sacred pilgrimage site centered around an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Male Mahadeshwara, considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
The hills consist of seven peaks collectively known as ‘Elu Male’ and rise about 3,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by dense forests. Legend states that Saint Mahadeshwara, believed to have lived around the 15th century, performed penance here and continues to reside in the temple’s sanctum in the form of a self-manifested Shiva Linga.
The temple was built by Junje Gowda, a devotee and local landlord, and has been managed over centuries by religious trusts. The site attracts lakhs of pilgrims from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, especially during festivals like Shivaratri, Ugadi, and Deepavali, combining spiritual significance with natural beauty and rich folklore.
