Manjarabad Fort
Manjarabad Fort, located near Sakaleshpura in Hassan district, Karnataka, is a unique star-shaped fort built by Tipu Sultan in 1792. The fort’s design was inspired by French star forts, creating an eight-pointed star layout that provided strategic defense advantages by minimizing blind spots and allowing coverage of all approaches.
Positioned at about 988 meters (3,240 feet) above sea level on a hill, the fort offers expansive views of the surrounding Western Ghats, and on clear days, even the Arabian Sea can be seen. Constructed with granite and lime mortar for the outer walls and fired bricks inside, the fort housed army barracks, armory, and underground cellars used for storing gunpowder.
Its name comes from the Kannada word "Manju," meaning fog, as Tipu Sultan found the fort shrouded in mist when he first inspected it. Originally built to protect a key highway between Mangalore and Mysore and to strengthen Tipu Sultan’s rule, the fort stands as a remarkable example of military architecture and historical significance in Karnataka.
