Melghat Wildlife Sanctuary
Melghat Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, is one of India's first tiger reserves established under Project Tiger in 1973-74. Spanning approximately 2,768 square kilometers in the southern part of the Satpura Hill Range, it features rugged terrain with hills, ravines, and dense tropical dry deciduous forests dominated by teak trees.
The sanctuary acts as a vital catchment area for five major rivers that feed into the Tapti River. Melghat supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including tigers, leopards, Indian bison (gaur), sloth bears, sambar deer, barking deer, and an impressive variety of over 250 bird species, including the rare forest owlet.
With its rich biodiversity, scenic viewpoints, and archaeological sites like Gawilgarh Fort, Melghat offers a unique blend of natural beauty and wildlife conservation. It remains a significant ecological region, promoting tiger conservation, anti-poaching efforts, and eco-tourism in Maharashtra.
