The Middle Ground Coastal Battery is a heritage site located on an islet called Middle Ground in Mumbai Harbour, Maharashtra, a few hundred meters from the Gateway of India. Originating as part of a reef, the basalt rock was fortified in 1682 by the British East India Company to counter sea piracy.
It later housed a marine police force and then came under the control of the Royal Navy and eventually the Indian Navy. The site features old coastal artillery installations and was used in World War II to protect the harbor with anti-aircraft guns. Today, it serves as a saluting base for the Flag Officer Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, where ceremonial gun firings take place.
The island also preserves remnants of India's maritime history including artifacts from the colonial period and naval heritage. It is managed and staffed by the Indian Navy and is not open to the public. The site stands as a symbol of Mumbai's strategic maritime defense legacy.
