Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary

Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Bhandara and Gondia districts of Maharashtra, spans around 153 square kilometers and is part of the Nawegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Established in 1970, the sanctuary is characterized by its lush southern tropical dry deciduous forests dominated by teak, ain, haldu, dhaora, bamboo, and a variety of shrubs and herbs.

It provides a rich habitat for diverse wildlife including Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, sloth bears, gaurs, sambhar deer, nilgai, chital, wild boars, and the elusive Indian pangolin. Birdlife is abundant with over 166 species, featuring Indian peafowls, bar-headed geese, and a variety of raptors. The sanctuary also hosts 36 species of reptiles and several amphibians.

It is managed as a crucial conservation area focused on protecting endangered species and maintaining ecological balance while promoting eco-tourism. Facilities for visitors include safari tours, watchtowers, and forest guest houses, making it accessible for nature enthusiasts and wildlife researchers. Nagzira plays a vital role in preserving biodiversity in central India’s forest landscape and has growing recognition as a significant wildlife destination.
