Nargund Fort, located in Gadag district, Karnataka, was constructed in 1675 by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during his southern campaign. Positioned on a hill within the town of Nargund, the fort was built strategically to be difficult for enemies to capture and served as a military stronghold to protect the region.
Unlike other forts, it lacked ornate palaces, dance floors, or temples, focusing instead on essential military features like watchtowers, ammunition storage, water reservoirs, and defensive walls. The fort was initially under Maratha control before being captured by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1691, then retaken by Marathas in 1707.
It later came under the rule of Mysore's Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, and played a role in the 1857 revolt against British rule. Though now largely in ruins, Nargund Fort remains a symbol of Maratha heritage and military architecture, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
