The New Maldhok Bird Sanctuary in Solapur, Maharashtra, established in 2015, is a protected area dedicated to conserving the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard, locally called Maldhok.
Covering about 1.98 square kilometers, it lies within the Southern Tropical Thorn forest region, part of the Deccan Peninsula biogeographic zone. The sanctuary supports a diverse ecosystem including other wildlife such as blackbucks, wolves, Indian foxes, jackals, and various reptiles alongside numerous bird species like painted storks, pallied harriers, and Eurasian spoonbills. It features flora like neem, sissoo, babul, and other thorny vegetation essential for habitat sustainability.
The sanctuary headquarters are located in Nannaj (Solapur district) and Rehekuri (Ahmednagar district). The area provides visitors with opportunities for bird watching and nature exploration, especially during the bustard’s nesting season from July to October, emphasizing its critical role in wildlife conservation and biodiversity protection in the region.
