Palamau Wildlife Sanctuary
Palamau Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Palamau Tiger Reserve, is located in the Latehar district of Jharkhand on the Chhotanagpur plateau and is the only tiger reserve in the state. Established in 1974 as one of India's first nine Project Tiger reserves, it covers about 1,130 square kilometers, including Betla National Park.
The reserve features dry deciduous forests dominated by sal trees and supports diverse wildlife such as Bengal tigers, leopards, Asiatic elephants, sloth bears, and several species of birds and smaller mammals. The area includes valleys, hills, and plains, with three main rivers—North Koel, Auranga, and the perennial Burha—flowing through the terrain.
Despite challenges from Naxal activities affecting forest management, the sanctuary remains a vital conservation area for biodiversity and tiger population in the region.
