Panhala Fort in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, is one of the largest forts in the Deccan region, perched atop a hill in the Sahyadri mountain range about 845 meters above sea level. Built by the Shilahara dynasty in the 12th century and developed further by various rulers, including the Yadavas, Bahmani Sultanate, Adil Shahi dynasty, and Marathas, it played a crucial role in regional conflicts and trade route control.
The fort is known for its robust fortifications stretching about 14 kilometers, triple gateways, and significant structures like the Andhar Bavadi (a hidden water source), Sajja Kothi (a watchtower), and Ambarkhana (granaries). It was a key military base for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and was the site of the heroic Battle of Pavan Khind, where Baji Prabhu Deshpande sacrificed his life.
