Pani Kotha
Pani Kotha, also known as Fortim-do-Mar, is a historic fort located on an islet in the Arabian Sea near Diu, Daman and Diu. Originally built during the Muslim rule by Malik Aiyaz, it served as an entry post to regulate merchant ships arriving for trade. Later, during Portuguese colonial rule, it was used as a prison.
The fort was strategically designed to resemble a ship, misleading potential invaders. In 1588, the Portuguese fortified the structure further, and in 1638, they added a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Victory to commemorate their triumph over the Dutch.
The fort also houses barracks, a warehouse, a cistern, and a residence for the commander. A lighthouse stands on the Menagem Bastion, offering scenic views of the surrounding waters. Pani Kotha is accessible only by motorboat and is illuminated at night with special light effects, creating a mesmerizing sight.
