Pavangad
Pavangad is a hill fort located in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, about half a mile east of the larger Panhala Fort, separated by a ravine. The fort's key defense is a steep, artificially sharpened rock face around 15 to 25 feet high, reinforced with a 14-foot high black stone parapet wall.
Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1673 to complement the Panhala Fort, it was later renamed Rasulgad by Aurangzeb after his capture. In 1827, the fort came under British control, and following a rebellion in 1844 where Colonel Ovans was imprisoned, the British stormed Panhala and dismantled Pavangad by pulling down its main entrances.
Despite its ruined state, the fort still has a good water supply and hosts several ancient Hindu temples such as those dedicated to Shiva, Hanuman, and Lakshmi, which continue to attract devotees. Recently, there have been concerns about illegal constructions affecting the historical sanctity of the fort area.
