Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Murud and Roha talukas of Raigad district, Maharashtra. It was established in 1986 to preserve the coastal woodland ecosystem of the Western Ghats and covers an area of 6,979 hectares. The sanctuary consists of forest, grasslands, and wetlands, and was once part of the hunting reserves of the princely state of Murud-Janjira.
The sanctuary is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including 16 species of mammals, over 200 species of birds, 17 reptiles, and various insects and marine invertebrates. Notable species include the Indian giant squirrel and the critically endangered White-rumped vulture. The sanctuary also features open grasslands called "maals" and natural water sources known as "gaan."
Visitors to Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary can explore the area through four main trails that lead to the main waterholes, Ghunyacha Maal, Chikhalgaan, and Phansadgaan. The sanctuary is best approached by road from Murud-Janjira and Roha, with the nearest railhead at Roha. The sanctuary is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, and offers activities such as bird watching, nature walks, and camping.
