Prachitgad
Prachitgad is an ancient hill fort located in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, near the Ratnagiri district. Built originally by Rana Jakhuray Surve in 1404 and later rebuilt during the 16th century, it gained prominence when the Maratha king Shivaji captured it in the 1660s. The fort witnessed notable historical events, including a battle led by Tanaji Malusare with a much smaller defending force due to betrayal.
It served as a strategic base for the Surve family and played a role in the Maratha resistance against various rulers. The fort features old fortifications, temples, wells, and remnants of artillery and is surrounded by dense forests, making it a popular trekking destination. Eventually captured by the British in 1818, Prachitgad now stands mostly in ruins but remains an important cultural and historic site, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into Maharashtra’s rich past.
