Raigad Fort
Raigad Fort, located on a hilltop in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, served as the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from 1674 to 1680. Originally called Rairi, the fort was captured and expanded by Shivaji, who renamed it Raigad, meaning "Royal Fort."
The fort rises about 1,356 meters above sea level and is known for its strong fortifications, including the massive Maha Darwaja gate with high bastions reinforced to deter elephant charges. Inside, it housed royal palaces, administrative buildings, a mint, and temples, including Jagdishwar Temple, built in the Hemadpanthi style. Raigad is also famous for the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj in 1674, marking a significant moment in Indian history as he adopted the title of Chhatrapati there.
Architectural features include watchtowers, granaries, a large marketplace, water reservoirs, and the execution cliff Takmak Tok. It is considered one of the most impregnable forts in India and remains a symbol of Maratha pride, accessible via a climb of about 1,737 steps or a ropeway.
