Sagargad Fort
Sagargad Fort is a historic hill fort in the Alibag taluka of Raigad district, Maharashtra. The fort, standing at an elevation of 440 meters (1,440 feet) above sea level, offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding lush green landscapes. The name "Sagargad" means "Fort of the Sea" in Marathi, reflecting its proximity to the coast.
The trek to Sagargad Fort starts from Khandale village on the Alibag-Pen road. The trail is adorned with scenic beauty, including the Dodhane Waterfall, a temple dedicated to Mahishasurmardini, and a small water tank along the way. A unique feature of Sagargad is the Siddheshwar monastery on the machi (plateau), which offers a serene halt for trekkers. During monsoons, the entire trail becomes a lush paradise with numerous streams and waterfalls.
Sagargad Fort has a rich historical background. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it from the Adilshah of Bijapur in 1660. The fort later changed hands between the Mughals, the Marathas, and finally the British. One of the fort's intriguing features is the Monkey Point, from which prisoners were said to be hurled down as punishment.
The best time to visit Sagargad Fort is during the monsoon and winter seasons, from June to February, when the weather is pleasant and the natural beauty is at its peak.
